Federal Appropriations Help Food Bank Meet Increased Need
Legislation signed by President will provide $492,000 for operations
BALTIMORE—Federal omnibus legislation signed by President Obama yesterday provides critical funding for Maryland Food Bank operations. The legislation allocates $492,000 to the food bank and will assist in making improvements to its office spaces, install a new roof at the Maryland Food Bank's 87,000-square-foot distribution center in Baltimore and other capital needs. The Maryland Food Bank has seen an increase in the demand for its services of up to 50 percent in the last year, largely a result of the economic recession. Maryland Food Bank CEO Deborah Flateman released the following statement:
“More people than ever are turning to the Maryland Food Bank for help during these difficult times,” Flateman said. “This federal funding is critical for us to meet the increased demand and ensure that more food gets to more people. We are grateful for the support of our Congressional representatives in obtaining funding for our operations that truly benefits our communities. The Maryland Food Bank is fortunate to have widespread support for our mission to end hunger among federal, state, and local officials.”
HR 3288 authorized appropriations for several federal agencies and important local projects. |
